Bayou St. John B & B is
only 5 minutes walk to The Fairgrounds (the second
oldest race track in America and home to the world
famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival
- A.K.A. JAZZ FEST), several of the city's most
popular restaurants (Lola's, Gabrielle, Cafe Degas),
the famous electric streetcar line, an above ground
cemeterey, City Park, the Botanical Gardens and
the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). For links

The opportunities
to simply stroll, bicycle or canoe beneath ancient
moss-covered oaks or through the interesting
residential neighborhoods surrounding the bed
and breakfast are countless. Four golf courses,
a golf driving range, 14 tennis courts, an olympic
running track, a childrens entertainment center,
a 2 mile miniature railroad and the infamous
Dueling Oaks (where southern gentleman settled
their differences with swords and pistols) are
all nearby. During Mardi Gras, several parades
pass just a pleasant walk up the bayou...

New
Orleans: It All Started Here
|
|
|

When
the French explorer Bienville came to the New
World in 1699 to establish a settlement on the
Mississippi River, he sailed into Lake Pontchartrain
and up Bayou Saint John. Landing just steps
from our B & B, Bienville followed the "portage"
favored by the local indian tribes (now Bayou
Road). This soon became the main route to the
French Quarter as the Mississippi River's current
made passage upriver difficult to impossible.
During Spanish Rule of Louisiana, the Customs
House, where sea going vessels unloaded their
cargo, was just 2 houses down (it's now a private
home).
